About the Artist, Judy Elliott-Maddison
I was born in Brisbane in 1956 and spent my childhood living on a remote sheep station outside Winton in Western Queensland. Interested in art from an early age, I finished school in 1972 and went on to complete a 3 year Associate Diploma in Fine Art at The Queensland College of Art in 1975.
In 1979, I moved to Cairns in North Queensland where I met the late John Kibby, an inspirational Artist, Teacher, Framer and Restorer. I became a member of “Cairns Artists United” and for many years attended John’s numerous workshops and dynamic life drawing classes.
I lived in Cairns for 23 years and throughout the 1980’s, worked mostly in Pastel and Coloured Pencil, selling large numbers of artworks. During this same period I completed my Registered Nursing and Midwifery Certificates at the Cairns Base Hospital.
It wasn’t until the1990’s that I decided to pursue my life long interest in Watercolour, attending watercolour classes, whilst at the same time completing a Bachelor of Health Science Degree by correspondence.
Working with experienced watercolourists, John Kibby, Pam Slattery and thereafter with the late Eula Jensen, I explored different styles and techniques. Strongly influenced by the vibrant colour of the tropics, I began to combine traditional transparent watercolour effects with mixed media such as collage, gouache and metallic relief paint, to create my own unique style.
In 2001 I held my first Solo Exhibition “Kaliedoscope” at the “Tanks Art Gallery” in Cairns, before moving to live in the Southern Flinders Ranges in South Australia in mid 2002. I traveled back to Cairns in 2003 for a second successful solo exhibition entitled “Tropical Symphony”, which was held at the “Art On Aplin” Gallery.
From 2004 to 2008, I was a member of “Painters of the Flinders Ranges Inc”, exhibiting yearly with other members in the historic Wilpena Woolshed in the Flinders Ranges National Park. At the same time, I continued to exhibit in joint and solo exhibitions, both interstate and in SA.
My passion for nature and wildlife has continued to play a major part in my painting. I enjoy experimenting with multiple layers of transparent watercolour glazes, often combining these techniques with gold relief and other metallic media. I am passionate about expressing my feelings for the natural environment with the use of vibrant colour, simplicity of composition and the interplay of negative and positive shapes.
I live with my Husband and Daughter on Survey Rd, Bangor, a winding picturesque road between the beautiful Port Germein Gorge Road and the historic town of Melrose. Here I have set up my Art Studio and Gallery, The Old Survey Art Gallery. This year, 2010, my exhibition "Outback Sun, Flinders Moon", a collection of recent wildlife, nature and landscape paintings will be on display from 5 September til 4 October - open 1pm to 4pm daily (other times if the open sign is out or by phoning 8666 5242.
